Boring mill machining
Boring mill machining to drawing: long bores and accurate bearing seats on large housings, gearboxes and machine beds
Since 1985, MWA – Mechanische Werkstätten Anhalt GmbH has been manufacturing components to your drawing or 3D model in Halberstadt (Saxony-Anhalt, Germany) – from single parts and prototypes to series production. For large housings, gearboxes and machine beds, boring mill machining is often the most economical route: several sides and long bores are machined in just a few set-ups.
Our machines with an extendable boring spindle (W axis) and 360° B axis machine workpieces with table loads of up to 40,000 kg. You provide the drawing, material, quantity and deadline – we take care of material procurement, manufacturing, inspection and delivery.

What is boring mill machining and when is it worthwhile?
A boring mill works with a horizontal spindle that can also be extended out of the headstock (W axis). This allows the tool to reach even deep-lying areas, and long bores are produced in a single pass.
Boring mill machining is worthwhile for large housings, gearboxes and machine beds: several sides and long bores are machined in just a few set-ups. This saves set-up time and improves the position of the bores relative to one another.
Which operations do we carry out on the boring mill?
- boring and fine boring of bearing seats,
- jig boring of precise hole patterns,
- tapping, reaming and countersinking,
- milling of contact, sealing and functional surfaces in the same set-up.
We describe further milling operations on the CNC milling page.
Which components is the boring mill suitable for?
Typical components are machine beds, housings and gearbox housings, welded assemblies and castings for mechanical and plant engineering, wind energy and railway vehicle construction.
Our focus is on medium-sized to large components from 1,000 to 3,000 mm. For very long workpieces of up to 12,000 mm, read more on the Large part machining page.

We machine large components on the machines with an extendable boring spindle, and smaller housings on horizontal machining centres. You can find the complete data for all machines in the machine list on the Contract manufacturing page.
Which materials do we machine?
We machine structural steel, quenched and tempered steels and case-hardening steels such as 42CrMo4 and 18CrNiMo7-6, grey cast iron, ductile cast iron, cast steel, stainless steels up to duplex 1.4462, aluminium, titanium, bronze and brass. On request, we source the material ourselves, with a material certificate.
We explain the properties and applications of the materials on the Commodity trading page.
Which tolerances are possible for bores?
- fits according to ISO 286, for example H7 for a bearing bore, determine how two parts fit together: with clearance, as a transition fit or as an interference fit,
- geometrical tolerances according to ISO 1101 describe, for example, roundness, coaxiality, parallelism or position,
- general tolerances according to ISO 2768 apply to all dimensions without their own tolerance,
- roughness (Ra, Rz) describes the surface quality: the smaller the value, the smoother the surface.
Tight tolerances and very smooth surfaces increase the effort. We check your drawing to see which tolerances make technical and economic sense for your component.
How are the components inspected and documented?
- inspection of all components before delivery and a measurement report on the characteristics of your drawing,
- first article inspection report (FAI) on request,
- material certificates according to EN 10204 (2.2 or 3.1),
- traceability of material and manufacturing,
- quality management according to ISO 9001, EN 9100, EN 9120 and ISO 14001.
Which documents do we need for a quote?
Drawing as a PDF, ideally a 3D model as a STEP file, material, quantity, desired delivery date and delivery location. For cast and welded parts, it also helps us if you state the blank dimensions and the machining allowance. We check feasibility free of charge and get back to you within 24 hours on working days. On request, we sign a non-disclosure agreement in advance.
The fastest way is via our enquiry form with file upload.
