CNC milling
CNC milling to drawing: from machining centres to travelling column milling machines with 12,000 mm of travel
Since 1985, MWA – Mechanische Werkstätten Anhalt GmbH has been manufacturing milled parts to your drawing or 3D model in Halberstadt (Saxony-Anhalt, Germany) – from single parts and prototypes to series production. Our machine park ranges from vertical, horizontal and universal machining centres to travelling column and gantry milling machines with travels of up to 12,000 mm and table loads of up to 40,000 kg.
You provide the drawing, material, quantity and deadline – we take care of material procurement, manufacturing, inspection and delivery. On request, you receive a measurement report, a first article inspection report (FAI) and material certificates according to EN 10204.

Which components is milling suitable for?
Milling is suited to prismatic parts with flat surfaces, pockets, slots, contours and hole patterns, for example plates, housings, brackets, bearing blocks and fixtures.
Our focus is on medium-sized to large components from 1,000 to 3,000 mm. We manufacture smaller components on vertical machining centres, and long and heavy workpieces of up to 12,000 mm on travelling column and gantry milling machines.
Which milling processes do we offer?
- face, contour, slot and pocket milling for functional and contact surfaces,
- thread milling for clean, reliable threads, even in large diameters,
- 3D milling of freeform surfaces according to a 3D model,
- large part milling on travelling column and gantry milling machines for long and heavy workpieces,
- boring mill machining, boring and fine boring of bearing seats, and jig boring of precise hole patterns.
You can read more about very large workpieces on the Large part machining page.
What are the benefits of 5-axis machining?
In 5-axis machining, the workpiece is also tilted and rotated. This allows several sides and angled surfaces to be machined in one set-up.
- higher accuracy, because re-clamping errors are eliminated,
- shorter lead times thanks to fewer set-ups,
- complex geometries, undercuts and freeform surfaces.
We use both simultaneous and indexed (3+2) 5-axis machining.

Which materials do we mill?
We machine structural steel, quenched and tempered steels and case-hardening steels such as 42CrMo4 and 18CrNiMo7-6, grey cast iron, ductile cast iron, cast steel, stainless steels up to duplex 1.4462, aluminium, titanium, bronze and brass. On request, we source the material ourselves, with a material certificate.
We explain the properties and applications of the materials on the Commodity trading page.
Which tolerances and surface finishes are possible?
- general tolerances according to ISO 2768 apply to all dimensions without their own tolerance,
- fits according to ISO 286, for example H7 for a bore, determine how two parts fit together,
- geometrical tolerances according to ISO 1101 describe, for example, flatness, parallelism or position,
- roughness (Ra, Rz) describes the surface quality: the smaller the value, the smoother the surface.
Tight tolerances and very smooth surfaces increase the effort. We check your drawing to see which tolerances make technical and economic sense for your component.
How are milled parts inspected and documented?
- inspection of all components before delivery and a measurement report on the characteristics of your drawing,
- first article inspection report (FAI) on request,
- material certificates according to EN 10204 (2.2 or 3.1),
- traceability of material and manufacturing,
- quality management according to ISO 9001, EN 9100, EN 9120 and ISO 14001.
