Large part machining
Large part machining to drawing: milling, boring and turning up to 12,000 mm and 40 t
Since 1985, MWA – Mechanische Werkstätten Anhalt GmbH has been manufacturing components to your drawing or 3D model in Halberstadt (Saxony-Anhalt, Germany). Our focus is on medium-sized to large components from 1,000 to 3,000 mm. For large parts, we operate travelling column, gantry and boring mill machines with travels of up to 12,000 mm and table loads of up to 40,000 kg.
You provide the drawing, material, quantity and deadline – we take care of material procurement, manufacturing, inspection and delivery. Very large castings and forgings are produced through our international manufacturing network, with MWA as your permanent point of contact.

What counts as a large part at MWA?
Large parts are long, large or heavy workpieces that do not fit on standard machining centres. Typical large parts are machine beds, housings, welded structures, castings, flanges and rings for mechanical and plant engineering, wind energy and rail vehicle construction.
Our focus is on medium-sized to large components from 1,000 to 3,000 mm. For large parts, machines with travels of up to 12,000 mm and table loads of up to 40,000 kg are available.
Which processes do we use for large parts?
- large part milling on travelling column and gantry milling machines for long and heavy workpieces,
- boring mill machining: several sides and long bores in just a few set-ups, plus boring and fine boring of bearing seats,
- jig boring of precise hole patterns, tapping, reaming and countersinking,
- vertical turning for components with large diameters,
- thread milling for reliable threads, even in large diameters.
Which machines are available for large parts?
| Machine | Travels X × Y × Z (mm) | Table load (kg) |
|---|---|---|
| FPT Area EVO 2 | 12.000 × 3.500 × 1.500 | 30.000 |
| SCHIESS CFZ 4.2 | 6.000 × 4.000 × 1.500 | 20.000 |
| KOLB Cubimat YC 2000 | 3.650 × 3.500 × 4.000 (W axis 2,000) | 40.000 |
| SCHIESS Rapid 130 | 3.000 × 2.000 × 1.600 (W axis 800) | 25.000 |
| IMT INTERMATO VBM 25.32 | 3.000 × 2.000 × 1.500 | 25.000 |
| STARRAG HECKERT HEC 1600 | 2.800 × 2.100 × 1.900 | 8.000 |

For which industries do we manufacture large parts?
- mechanical and plant engineering: machine beds, housings, bearing blocks, shafts and flanges,
- wind energy and offshore: flanges, rings, hub attachments and large-diameter brackets,
- rail vehicle construction: brackets, housings and bogie attachments with traceability.
Very large castings and forgings are produced through our international manufacturing network, with MWA as your permanent point of contact.
What influences the price of large parts?
- component size and weight: determine the machine and the handling effort,
- programming and set-up: are incurred once per order,
- material, tolerances and surface finishes,
- additional services such as heat treatment, coating, inspection documents and packaging.
How are large parts inspected and documented?
- inspection of all components before delivery and a measurement report on the characteristics of your drawing,
- first article inspection report (FAI) on request,
- material certificates according to EN 10204 (2.2 or 3.1),
- traceability of material and manufacturing,
- quality management according to ISO 9001, EN 9100, EN 9120 and ISO 14001.
Which documents do we need for a quote?
Drawing as a PDF, ideally a 3D model as a STEP file, material, quantity, desired delivery date and delivery location. We check feasibility free of charge and get back to you within 24 hours on working days. On request, we sign a non-disclosure agreement in advance.
The fastest way is via our enquiry form with file upload.
Do you have a large or heavy component?
Send us your drawing (PDF, STEP, DXF, DWG or IGES) with material, quantity and desired delivery date. We check feasibility free of charge and get back to you with a quote within 24 hours on working days.
