Turning and grinding
CNC turning and grinding to drawing: from shafts to large diameters, with dimensionally accurate functional surfaces
Since 1985, MWA – Mechanische Werkstätten Anhalt GmbH has been manufacturing turned and ground parts to your drawing or 3D model in Halberstadt (Saxony-Anhalt, Germany) – from single parts and prototypes to series production. We turn shafts, axles, pins, bushings, flanges and rings, and by vertical turning also components with large diameters, and we grind functional surfaces that must be particularly accurate or smooth.
You provide the drawing, material, quantity and deadline – we take care of material procurement, manufacturing, inspection and delivery. Our services also include shaft repair and the reconditioning of worn components.

Knowledge: turning and grinding at MWA
Everything you need to know about turning and grinding at MWA at a glance: click on a topic to expand it. We will be happy to advise you personally on your specific component.
Which components is turning suitable for?
Turning is the process for rotationally symmetrical parts such as shafts, axles, pins, bushings, flanges and rings.
Typical turned parts are shafts and flanges for mechanical and plant engineering, as well as large-diameter flanges and rings for wind energy and offshore.
Which turning processes do we offer?
- short and long turning for shafts and axles,
- facing and internal turning for flanges, bushings and bores,
- thread turning for external and internal threads,
- vertical turning for components with large diameters,
- shaft repair and reconditioning of worn components.
When does grinding make sense?
Grinding is used when functional surfaces must be particularly accurate or smooth, for example bearing seats, sealing surfaces and guideways.
- surface grinding for flat surfaces,
- cylindrical and internal grinding for shafts and bores,
- profile grinding for special contours.
Which lathes are available?
| Machine | Control | Table load (kg) |
|---|---|---|
| IMT INTERMATO VBM 25.32 | Siemens 840D | 25,000 |
| JOHNFORD GT80D-2S | Fanuc 18i-TB | 5,000 |
You can find the complete data for all machines in the machine list on the Contract manufacturing page. We carry out milling and drilling work on turned parts, for example slots, hole patterns and threads, on our machining centres – more on this on the CNC milling page.
Which materials do we turn and grind?
We machine structural steel, quenched and tempered steels and case-hardening steels such as 42CrMo4 and 18CrNiMo7-6, grey cast iron, ductile cast iron, cast steel, stainless steels up to duplex 1.4462, aluminium, titanium, bronze and brass. On request, we source the material ourselves, with a material certificate.
Many turned and ground parts require heat treatment such as hardening, quenching and tempering or nitriding. We coordinate such special processes through our manufacturing network, so you receive the finished component from a single point of contact. More about the materials on the Commodity trading page.
Which tolerances and surface finishes are possible?
- fits according to ISO 286, for example H7 for a bore or h6 for a shaft, determine how two parts fit together: with clearance, as a transition fit or as an interference fit,
- geometrical tolerances according to ISO 1101 describe, for example, roundness, parallelism or position,
- general tolerances according to ISO 2768 apply to all dimensions without their own tolerance,
- roughness (Ra, Rz) describes the surface quality: the smaller the value, the smoother the surface.
Tight tolerances and very smooth surfaces increase the effort. We check your drawing to see which tolerances make technical and economic sense for your component.
How are turned and ground parts inspected and documented?
- inspection of all components before delivery and a measurement report on the characteristics of your drawing,
- first article inspection report (FAI) on request,
- material certificates according to EN 10204 (2.2 or 3.1),
- traceability of material and manufacturing,
- quality management according to ISO 9001, EN 9100, EN 9120 and ISO 14001.
Which documents do we need for a quote?
Drawing as a PDF, ideally a 3D model as a STEP file, material, quantity, desired delivery date and delivery location. We check feasibility free of charge and get back to you within 24 hours on working days. On request, we sign a non-disclosure agreement in advance.
The fastest way is via our enquiry form with file upload.
Do you need turned or ground parts to drawing?
