From quantity 1 to your drawing or 3D model: small to medium-sized parts from Halberstadt

Since 1985, MWA – Mechanische Werkstätten Anhalt GmbH in Halberstadt (Saxony-Anhalt) has manufactured turned and milled parts to your drawing or 3D model: from the first prototype through small series to series production and recurring parts. There is no minimum quantity; we manufacture from batch size 1.

Small to medium-sized parts are our focus; workpieces up to Ø 2,500 mm, 6,000 mm in length, 3,000 mm in height and 25 t are possible. Milling, 5-axis milling, boring mill machining, turning and grinding come from a single source, and on request we also procure the material.

Knowledge: From Prototype to Series

Everything you need to know about manufacturing from prototype to series at MWA: click on a topic to expand it. For your specific component, we are happy to advise you in person.

Which quantities does MWA manufacture?

MWA manufactures from batch size 1 up to series production. There is no minimum quantity.

  • Single parts, for example spare parts, fixtures and conversion parts,
  • Prototypes and sample parts,
  • Small series,
  • Series and recurring parts, with a framework agreement on request.

It is often worthwhile to request several quantities, for example 1, 5 and 20 pieces. This way you can see in the quote how the setup costs affect the unit price.

What is important for prototypes and sample parts?

We manufacture prototypes and sample parts to your drawing or 3D model. With prototypes, designs often still change, so a clear revision status on every drawing is important.

If a series is planned for later, please tell us right away. We will then take a production strategy suitable for series into account even for the prototype and can give you tips on reducing costs.

How does the transition from prototype to series succeed?

The transition works best when the drawing, tolerances and material are frozen before series start. The prototypes are often followed by a first article delivery with a first article inspection report, which you approve before the series begins.

Experience from prototype manufacturing, for example regarding critical tolerances, flows into series planning. Contact us early and we will plan this together.

How do series and repeat parts work?

For repeat parts, the program and the clamping concept are retained. As a result, follow-up orders run faster and with consistent quality. Please state the annual quantity and the desired call-off quantities in your enquiry, and we will calculate accordingly. On request, we work with a framework agreement.

How large can the parts be?

Our focus is on small to medium-sized parts. Workpieces up to Ø 2,500 mm, 6,000 mm in length (X), 3,000 mm in height and 25 t are possible.

Typical components are shafts, flanges, rings, housings, brackets, consoles, valve and pump parts. You can find the individual machines on the page MWA in Figures.

Which processes are available from prototype to series?

On request, we procure the material through our commodity trading, also with a material certificate.

Why is the unit price higher for a prototype than for a series?

A single part bears the entire one-off costs of programming, setup and first-part inspection on its own. With ten or a hundred parts, these costs are spread across the whole quantity and the unit price falls accordingly. With larger quantities, the material can also be procured at a better price and the machining can be better optimised.

Which inspection documents will I receive?

  • Measurement report on the characteristics of your drawing,
  • First article inspection report on request,
  • Material certificate according to EN 10204 (2.2 or 3.1), more in the guide Material certificate according to EN 10204,
  • Traceability of material and production.

Our quality management works according to ISO 9001, EN 9100, EN 9120 and ISO 14001.

What information do we need for a quote?

Send us the drawing as a PDF, ideally a 3D model as a STEP file, plus material, quantity, desired date and delivery location. We check feasibility free of charge and get back to you within 24 hours on working days. On request, we sign a non-disclosure agreement in advance.

The fastest way is via our enquiry form with file upload. You can find all services on the page Contract manufacturing.

Are you planning a prototype or a series?

Send us your drawing (PDF, STEP, DXF, DWG or IGES) with material, quantity and desired delivery date. We check feasibility free of charge and get back to you with a quote within 24 hours on working days.
